How to make money drawing NSFW furry art

The used panty marketplace

For years, struggling artists have turned to an interesting place to find clients for their artwork: the furry community. Furries are known to be some of the best customers to work with on the internet, and they’re generally willing to pay a premium for your artwork.

What are furries?

Furries are individuals with a strong interest in anthropomorphic animals, or animals that take on human characteristics. The furry fandom is huge, and encompasses fans, artists, writers, gamers, and role players.

You probably think that being a furry is intrinsically sexual. Many furries look at furry porn, but there are many other aspects to the community. Not everyone looks at being a furry as a sexual thing, but instead a part of their identity.

Many furries create a fursona, or their own animal character who they can role play as. They commission art of this fursona so they can use it as an avatar and show people a drawing that represents who they truly are.

You’ve probably seen fursuits at conventions, but the majority of furries don’t actually wear them. They prefer to keep their furry identity online.

Overall, furries just aren’t as weird as many people think they are. At the end of the day, they’re just regular people with a unique interest and/or fetish. And doesn’t everyone have at least one of those?

If you’re interested in breaking into the world of drawing peoples’ fursonas and furry porn, make sure that you’re not weirded out by the concept. You won’t want to work hard on something that makes you uncomfortable, and clients may even be able to tell that you feel that way by the artwork you draw.

Why are furries such good clients?

Many artists love working with furries. They have a reputation of paying for lots of art from their favorite creators, accepting prices, and even leaving great tips.

Studies have found that most furries make about an average amount of money per year (about $31,000), so they’re not spending a lot of money because they’re rich. However, being a furry is a huge part of most of their identities, and role playing is one of their biggest hobbies. If you’re extremely interested in something, you’re much more likely to spend money on it.

How much money can you make as a furry artist?

The amount of money you make drawing this art will largely depend on two things. First, how much do you charge for each furry art commission? Most artists offer different tiers for their drawings. For instance, a simple black and white drawing may cost $25, while a 3D illustration in full color could cost $250 or more.

Pricing your art can be tricky, especially when you’re starting out. You want to value your work, but you also want to attract new clients who are taking a chance on you. Check out some other furry artists on sites like Fur Affinity or DeviantArt to see how much they’re charging.

It can help to think about giving yourself a reasonable hourly rate. Next time you do a furry drawing, time yourself. You might be surprised to find that you’re only charging $25 for something that costs you five hours to make! Even when you’re starting on your journey, try to charge enough so you’re making at least $10 per hour, or the minimum wage in your state, or whatever seems reasonable.

The second thing that determines how much money you’ll make is your number of clients. Unfortunately, this can be hard to control. Even when you’re advertising your services like we’ll recommend below, you might still have slower times when you don’t make as much money. That’s to be expected.

If you want to figure out whether being a furry artist is right for you, do the math. Multiply the average cost of a possible commission with the number of clients you’d like to get per month.

This number might be a little lower than you expected. For many artists, drawing furry porn is either a labor of love for the community that they’re in or a side hustle.

If you want to go full-time, you could try drawing in other explicit genres. Some of the most popular ones are hentai, tentacles, fan art, vore, and other fetish art. You can apply many of the principles in this article to getting into these arenas.

People who are interested in sex work could also supplement their income with other sexual jobs, especially those that require less of a time commitment. You might consider selling your used panties, being a phone sex operator, or creating an OnlyFans account to make more money so you don’t have to work a 9-5 in addition to your art.

Where Can You Currently Get Furry Art Commissions?

Where Can You Currently Get Furry Art Commissions?

Finding somewhere to get a furry art commission can be overwhelming. There are literally thousands of artists, all waiting for the next commission before. Like we said before, these guys don’t make a crazy amount of money. However, from what we found there are a few good ways to go about commissioning art.

  1. Commission someone on social media: Be it Twitter or Instagram, this way you can easily stay in touch with the artist throughout the artistic process. They can send you drafts and sketches, while you can tell them what to keep or change.
  2. Fursonafy: This site is a great option if you’re looking to get a furry art commission because they keep it simple. 4 packages (headshot, bust, full-body or reference sheet), 4 prices, no beating around the bush. Select a package, answer the prompts and complete!
  3. Fiverr Commissions: Using Fiverr has similar perks to using social media but the upside is, it’s a lot easier to find more affordable commissions than on Instagram and Twitter. It’s also easier to see the portfolio of the artist you’re buying from and therefore whether you’re getting your money’s worth.

Of course, these aren’t the only ways to go about getting a commission, but they proved to be the most efficient.

How to get your first client

Of course, you know that you can draw a sexy anthropomorphic fox with the best of them. However, you won’t get commissions unless people can see your previous work and find your listings advertising commissions online. Here’s how to do that.

First, a caveat. If you’ve never drawn furry art before, you have some research to do. You need to learn the art style and see what people like in their fursonas and porn drawings. If you’re not familiar with the genre, furries will probably be able to tell. Even though you might not be a furry yourself, you should still engage with the community that you’ll be profiting off of.

You should start your journey by creating a portfolio. You need to show potential clients that you are a great artist who knows how to draw furries. That means that, for the most part, drawings that you did in art school or more abstract art probably won’t help make your case.

You’ll need at least five to eight drawings or illustrations, and at least 75% of them should be of furries. You might be able to make an exception if you have other cartoon animated art that is in the same style. Since you’ll probably offer different tiers in different levels of detail, make sure that you have at least one example for each tier in your portfolio.

If you don’t already have these drawings, you’ll need to create them on spec (aka for free). There’s no way to get hired as an artist if you can’t show people that you can give them the product they want. Once you have had some clients, you can ask them if you can use their commissioned illustrations in your portfolio as well.

Next, you’ll need to post these illustrations in places where other people can find them. DeviantArt is a great place to host your portfolio so you can send people links to it later. You should also post the images in your portfolio to Fur Affinity and The Dealers Den. These are both huge sites in the furry community, and lots of people go there to find artists to draw fursonas or porn for them.

You might be able to get people to purchase your illustrations from your portfolio alone. On DeviantArt, you can post commission opportunities that are searchable on the site. There’s a lot of competition, but if you have an amazing portfolio, you might be able to stand out.

A client will message you on DeviantArt if they’re interested. Once you know what exactly they want, you can quote them a price. They might want to negotiate, but it’s up to you to decide what price seems right to you for your art.

Once you come to an agreement, it’s time for money to exchange hands. It’s a good idea to ask for at least half of your fee up front. That way, they can’t commission you and then disappear. You can even ask for the whole fee right away, which will give you some security.

You’ll then have some peace of mind to work on your illustration. Make sure that you give your clients a realistic timeframe for when you’ll finish your art, and build in a little wiggle room in case life gets in the way. You don’t want to get a reputation for not getting your art to people on time.

When you deliver your work, put a watermark on it before your client approves it. That way, they won’t have their clean copy until you get your full payment if you took half of the money (or no money) up front.

If they're not happy with the drawing, you can work together to come to an agreement. If they’re happy, hooray! You just got your first commission sale!

Unfortunately, sometimes finding clients for your work isn’t that easy. After all, there’s a lot of competition between artists for commissions. If you really want to make money this way, you’ll want to start getting attention from the furry community.

How to find clients using social media

People need to find your work in order to buy it. For that reason, posting art on social media can be a great way to get your illustrations in front of peoples’ eyes!

This might feel like working for free. In reality, you’re right. If you want to approach selling furry art this way, you’ll need to make art that you won’t get a fee for. It can be frustrating to work hard on a piece and then put it up on social media for free.

However, think of it as advertising. You’ll need to draw people in in order to sell them something, and in this case, it’s your art. If you enjoy drawing for drawing’s sake, you’ll probably have fun figuring out what to post next on your social media. However, if you’re looking to make money quickly, giving out lots of drawings for free probably isn’t the best move.

If you draw explicit art, it can be more difficult to post it online. For example, Instagram doesn’t allow nudity on their site (and that includes anthropomorphic animal nudity, too). You can censor these images and link to explicit versions of them in your bio, if you like. You could also focus on clean images so you can post them more easily online.

You can make art accounts on whatever social media you like. Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram are all pretty successful. However, you might find ways to make a splash elsewhere if you’re creative.

You can also draw people in by livestreaming your drawing process on Instagram Live or a similar site. Furries will be able to tune in to your streams to watch you draw, and you can play music or chat with them while you do. Current clients will check it out in order to see a sneak peek of what you’ve designed, and people who are interested in commissioning you can watch to see how you work. You could even draw something independently and then put it up for sale for viewers of the livestream.

When you’re developing content to post online, it doesn’t necessarily have to be exclusively of furries. Lots of furries are nerdy, so it’s a great idea to post fan art. You might also cover some other kinks, or just illustrations that you are proud of! You can post whatever you want to your art accounts!

Post each of your drawings on DeviantArt and Fur Affinity as well. Utilize DeviantArt’s tag system to get your drawings in front of as many furries as possible.

Over time, people will start to admire your art, and they’ll want to follow you on social media. Then they’ll see every new piece you post, including announcements when you’re taking commissions.

Other ways to make money as a furry artist

If you want to make serious money off of your furry art, you’ll want to diversify your income. Maybe commissions shouldn’t be your only source of making money.

First, you might be able to sell your art pieces that you create for your social media pages. Prints allow customers to hang your art on their walls. You can make stickers, shirts, or pins of your art as well. You can sell this stuff on Etsy or on a print on demand site like Redbubble. Just make sure that you advertise your merchandise on your social media so people know it’s there.

There are actually a few furry-run sites that will let you create unique products. Furry Dakimakura offers mouse pads, face masks, and most interestingly, body pillows. You have to apply to have your items hosted on the site, but it seems like a pretty simple process that results in royalties for you.

Paw to Press is also a site by furries, for furries. They’ll help you print your merch and send it out to customers. Just keep in mind that they’ll take a cut of your sales.

Once you’ve gained a decent following on social media, you might consider getting a Patreon. People can pledge a certain amount of money to you per month in order to access rewards, which can range from anything from exclusive art to prints to monthly Q&As. When furries love someone’s work, they’re often very loyal, so you could get a massive following here.

If you love both art and sex, drawing furry porn could be your best way into the sex industry. It’s a lot of work, but it’s definitely possible to find lots of success by catering to this unique community!
