Morning Sex Makes You More Productive During the Day, Research Says

The used panty marketplace

With the morning sunlight illuminating your bedroom with a romantic glow and cuddles in bed turning a bit handsy - have you ever thought of morning sex with a partner?

You likely have, but snoozed alarms, coffee that’s calling your name and that morning meeting you have to get ready for are all pretty big deterrents to getting in the mood first thing in the morning.

But what if I told you that morning sex is not only fun, but would actually make you more productive throughout your busy day? Whether you’ve spent all night making each other moan only to go back at it in the morning or you want a quickie before work - there are more reasons than just getting off that will make you want to get frisky this morning.

There are loads of positive health benefits to having sex, and having sex in the morning comes with a few extra bonuses on top.

Why Have Morning Sex?

According to an in-depth study by Mattress Advisor, most people start their mornings with a trip to the bathroom, checking their phone and brewing a cup of coffee. Adding in a quick shower or a skin-care/work-out routine in some cases before getting started with their day.

However, on days where the 1000 participants of the study reported being really productive, they followed up their morning coffee with having morning sex with their partner.

Not only does research show checking social media or using your phone to scroll through your missed emails can make it difficult to focus on the things that need to get done in your morning routine, but having sex in the morning actually does the opposite...it boosts productivity!

Okay, wait...morning sex makes you more productive?

It really does. Sexual health experts have explained the health benefits to sex many times before (most of which will be outlined throughout this article), but there is something specifically about sex in the morning that boosts our productivity throughout the day.

In fact, 53% of men and 45% of women surveyed said morning sex had a positive effect on their productivity throughout the entire day.

Who Wants Morning Sex? Men, Mostly.

According to a 2015 survey by popular sex toy brand Lovehoney, men are at their horniest between 6 and 9 in the morning, and women are typically their horniest between 11 at night and 2 in the morning.

According to the results of the survey, which consisted of 2300 adults, men and women have pretty polarizing “peak horniness” times, too - with 7:54 in the morning being the time most men are horny compared to 11:21 at night for most women.

If you’re partnered up with a man who wants to use his “morning wood” to keep you in bed a few extra minutes, you might just want to take him up on his offer.

Because Ladies...There’s Something In It For You, Too!

While fitting a good orgasm into your busy morning schedule (and by difficult I mean quite literally the last thing on your mind as you’re getting ready for the day), there are definitely some benefits to having sex in the morning that will start your day off right.

One of which is that your man will likely last longer than usual in the morning.

Did you know that testosterone levels are at their peak in the morning hours

This means a higher libido and greater stamina, as well as what can be described as “stronger erection strength”, which all sounds really, really great to me.

Not only that, but morning sex may give you a (valid) reason for skipping the gym.

While having sex may not be the equivalent of completing your entire 1.5-hour workout, sex burns calories, increases your heart rate and gets your endorphins flowing...all the same as a work-out would.

In fact, this Harvard Medical School study suggests sex can burn up to 5 calories per minute.

Adding that to his ability to last longer due to higher testosterone levels and you’ve got yourself a damn good reason to replace “home yoga” with “rough sex on the kitchen table” before you jet off to work in the morning.

Actually, Morning Sex is Great for Everyone

There are lots of other health benefits to morning sex specifically, that could be great for your health, his health and the health of your relationship.

More Sex, Less Stress

Heading to work on an overcrowded train or being stuck in traffic suddenly doesn’t seem like that big of a deal when your lady-bits are still tingly from the thorough lovin’ they got less than 30 minutes ago, right?

In fact, orgasms boost your mood...it’s science.

Oxytocin, commonly referred to as the “love hormone” because of how warm, fuzzy and happy it makes us feel, is released during intercourse. Not only that but cortisol, a stress hormone, is also decreased during intercourse.

Sex is quite literally a hormone-cocktail of feel-good vibes...so why not give yourself a big dose in the morning?

Sex Is Good for the Brain

Giving your brainpower a boost to establish a confident, intelligent presence at work can be as simple as letting your man go down on you in the morning and finishing off with some speedy intercourse so you both make it out the door on time.

How?

Well, multiple studies have proven that getting busy releases a mix of neurotransmitters and hormones (particularly dopamine, the “feel-good” hormone) that help boost brain health and mental cognition.

You Can Forget About Your Morning Skincare Routine

Well...kind of. Not only is having an orgasm in the morning enough to boost your mood and brainpower, but it can also do wonders for your skin!

A 2009 University of Michigan study concluded that the estrogen that’s released during orgasm can aid in the prevention of aging skin by prevents the decreasing of collagen (that important protein that most moisturizers are rich with) and helping your skin become thicker, making it more resistant to wrinkles.

Who Cares About Boring Morning Meetings When You’ve Just Had Incredible Morning Sex?

Morning meetings and trying to put on your “happy face” in the mornings to speak with colleagues or your superiors can feel exhausting.

Who wants to pretend they are happy first thing in the morning? All I’m thinking about is swimming in a pool full of coffee while eating as many donuts as I can fit into my mouth and here Becky in HR is droning on about...well, I have no idea, because I’m only pretending to listen.

Coffee isn’t the only thing that can put a smile on your face in the morning...sex can, too.

In fact, sex boosts your confidence, makes you feel more alert and focused and makes you happier, meaning your morning smile doesn’t have to feel as forced as usual.

How to Fit (Great) Morning Sex into Your Routine

This all sounds great and everything...but how does one actually make time for morning sex? Specifically, how is a woman supposed to make time for morning sex?

While many guys may joke about how long it takes their female partner to get ready, Glamour tested just how long it takes for both men and women to “get ready”...and you might be shocked at the difference.

You can watch the video here, but let me break it down for you...

Women take an average of 21 days, 15 hours and 48 minutes per year to “get ready” in the morning. This is compared to the mere 8 days, 11 hours and 12 minutes men take per year to get ready for their morning commute.

So...who has time for morning sex?

More importantly, how do you make time for morning sex?

Start Slow...The Mood Will Build

I’m most specifically talking to the gentlemen with this tip...we know you are ready to go in the morning through no fault of your own, it’s biology. Your Little Generall is already up and ready for action...but we’re not there with you, yet.

Build the erotic tension by whispering some naughty things to each other, touching those feel-good places and caressing each other. While you may not have time for intense foreplay, some foreplay will likely be required to get off in the morning.

You Could Set an Earlier Alarm

While this sounds literal hell for some people, it might be worth it to set an alarm for 20 minutes before your normal time.

Scheduling time for sex in the morning by cutting into your sleep isn’t always the best idea, though - you want to make sure you’re also super rested for work...so this tip is best left to people who get more than their designated 8 hours of sleep per night.

According to the Mattress Advisor study referenced at the beginning of this article, men would sacrifice about 40 minutes of sleep in order to have morning sex, and women would feel comfortable sacrificing around 30 minutes of sleep to achieve an orgasm in the morning.

If you’re averaging closer to 9 or 10 hours of sleep per night, you can afford to “lose” a measly 30-40 minutes to have an orgasm (or two) before work...just make sure you’re balancing sleep and with pleasure and not sacrificing too much, because lack of sleep can have the opposite effect on your productivity and health.

Tweak Your Morning Routine...Just a Little

While nearly 54% of people in the study said they’d rather have time for their morning shower than risk missing it for morning sex, there are maybe some parts of your routine that you’d feel comfortable giving up a few mornings a week to make morning sex a regular habit.

Skipping a morning exercise to have sex is something over 70% of people would do, according to the Mattress Advisor study. 78% of people would give up a morning meditation and 68.5% of people would give up time on their computer in order to have morning sex.

In most cases, there is likely room in your routine for morning sex if you’re willing to shave off the time you spend in the shower, meditating, meal prepping or checking your social media.

Showering Together Conserves Both Time and Energy

Scrub a-dub-dub, two lovers in the tub. Well, actually two lovers in the shower powering through their morning shower routine in order to get it on and get out in the same amount of time it would normally take to lather, rinse, repeat.

Shower sex can be fun and efficient if you know what you’re doing. One of these days, I’ll write a shower sex guide (because it’s definitely not as easy as you’re thinking it is) - but for now, here’s a quick tip: don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to shower sex.

Think less penetration, more on your knees giving the best oral of his or her life. A climax is a climax, right? Also...buying a non-slip shower mat is an absolute must...trust me.

Combat Morning Sleepiness with Easy-to-Climax Sex Positions

Sometimes you want to go all out, and sometimes you just really, really don’t. That’s totally okay! It’s the morning time, you’re sleepy and exhausted, haven’t had your morning coffee yet, likely haven’t even brushed your teeth.

Getting it on before either of you make it out of bed doesn’t have to be a huge event - try positions that are relatively easy and comfortable, like spooning or doggy style, where you can get off with minimal effort.

Don’t Get Out of Bed Until You’re Both Satisfied

While it may be tempting to slip out of bed to do a part of your morning routine (who wants to have sex with morning breath, right?) - don’t get out of bed until you’ve both climaxed.

Getting out of bed and starting your routine will make you far less likely to climb back into bed for some sweet loving with your partner.

Want to avoid morning breath? Well, you can kiss other places, you know, besides the mouth. His neck, her tits, his stomach, her cheek...there are lots of ways to include sweet kisses in your morning sex without worrying about pesky morning breath ruining the mood.

With All These Benefits...How Common Is Morning Sex, Really?

While I can lay out all the facts and bonuses about having sex in the morning, how many people actually do this? According to that epic Mattress Advisor study, men are more likely to want morning sex than women.

Apparently, 36.8% of men and 63.3% of women have never had morning sex. Why is that, with all the benefits I’ve just outlined? Well, maybe the same reason you’re hesitant to say “yes” to morning yoga - you’re tired and would much rather spend extra time hugging your pillow than riding your partner.

But...if you’re not totally convinced on morning sex, let me give you some quick stats on how common it is (and isn’t). Here are some more interesting numbers about the frequency of morning sex in different populations...

Average morning sex frequency (gender and sexual orientation):

  • 4.2 times per month (for men)
  • 3.1 times per month (for women)
  • 2.6 times per month (for heterosexuals)
  • 2.9 times per month (for bisexuals)
  • 3 times per month (for homosexuals)

People who have never had morning sex:

  • 36.8% of men have never had morning sex
  • 63.3% of women have never had morning sex

Days of the week where morning sex is easiest:

  • 15.1% - Monday
  • 13.1% - Tuesday
  • 17% - Wednesday
  • 14.3% - Thursday
  • 20.3% - Friday
  • 71.2% - Saturday
  • 66.6% - Sunday

When saying “no” to morning sex, more than half of the women surveyed explained it was simply because they “weren’t in the mood” or didn’t have the energy first thing in the morning.

Not having enough time in the morning routine and just simply not liking sex in the morning were other common reasons to say no to morning climaxes.

However, 51.2% of men and 20.3% of women who aren’t having morning sex explained they would like to make time for sex in the morning.

So maybe there’s something to this whole “morning sex” thing...why not give it a try and do a little experiment of your own?

My proposal? Set at least two days a week (for a few weeks) where you and your partner have morning sex. Compare your own productivity and happiness on those days to the days where you don’t get frisky before your morning coffee, and see for yourself!

More Productive, Happier, Slightly Rushed and Definitely Satisfied People Have Sex in The Morning

Studies suggest couples have sex around once per week to maintain an intimate and happy relationship. That number will inevitably vary over time: kids, jobs, lifestyle changes, stressors, high moments, low moments...your sex life is bound to change every once and a while.

Couple kissing on the bed on early morning

And the importance of a good morning can’t be overstated...I mean, you hear things that support that theory all the time.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and “someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning” spring to mind as little anecdotes that prove mornings are important. And oftentimes how you start your day has a huge impact on how you feel throughout the rest of your day.

Adding morning sex into your routine isn’t a must in order to have a productive day - but the research doesn’t lie: it helps a great deal! It’s important to find a routine that works best for you and your partner, that fits with your lifestyle and doesn’t put too much pressure on the physical intimacy of your relationship.
