In these unsettled times, it’s always good to have a backup plan or even a side hustle to keep income flowing. Work from home options are always in high demand. There’s a convenience factor, especially during this pandemic. Camming is a work from home side hustle that can make you some serious money. Some people have even started with camming as a side hustle and it is now their main source of income. They are proud to be their own boss, own their own business, and love the freedom that comes with it.
While this may seem like a very straightforward topic, like anything else there are a ton of facets to it. At its most basic level it’s performing sex acts on camera while one or more people watch. It’s sex work. The people that watch pay with tips for you to perform for them.
My initial thoughts about camming were very basic when I began educating myself about it. To me, it was the basic definition that I wrote earlier. It’s featured on the hit show The Girlfriend Experience. On the show, the main character cams, in addition to being a high end escort, to pay her way through law school. It’s a very typical story that on surface follows the cliché of the girl engaging in sex work to pay for school. What the show does well is give us a look into the complicated emotions, both highs and lows, of this type of work. It shows that camming is anything but basic and straightforward.
There are loads of other things that you’ll get out of working as a cam model other than money. Some things you’ll gain by being a cam model:
The documentary Cam Girlz was a hugely insightful. I highly recommend you watch it if camming is something that you are considering doing it. It was a revelation. Many of the ladies get more than just money. They get a connection that helps with their confidence. They get an outlet to explore and own their sexuality. Cam models are all shapes, sizes, and ages. Some even have husbands and kids. One of the models never takes her clothes all the way off. She is actually depicted doing a show, showing a nipple while masturbating and then when the show is done, she slips her jeans on, buttons her shirt and goes on about her day.
It’s exciting, fun, and empowering. You own your own business. You are in charge of how much or how little money you make. It’s all about how hard you want to work and how you market yourself. All of the models that I learned about are smart and have amazing business sense. They took the time to learn how to market themselves and what works for them. Here are some other reasons in this article.
In this industry, younger women in their 20’s tend to make the most money. However, there is a market for everyone. There are some men that prefer older women; this isn’t just older men. There are some young men and love chatting with women old enough to be their moms or even grandmas. Men don’t do as well as women do with a camming business, but they can also make a decent income if they market themselves accordingly.
Most of the tools that you need you may already have.
When it comes to cam modeling, you are the most important part of the equation. You aren’t just selling sex; you are selling yourself. You are the product.
As you begin your journey into camming, you want to find the thing that makes you stand out from the other models so you can have more clients and make more money. What are your likes? Dislikes? Do you have special talents or interests? Maybe you like to play the guitar and play for your clients. Maybe you are really into superheroes and can do cosplay. Do you like to dance? Read aloud? Your cam show should highlight what you like. Once you pick a persona, you need to stick with it. Lying can and will make you lose clients.
Any girl can try and be the woman they think guys want. However, the girls that do the best with their clients are their authentic self. The men that log in want a real woman that has her own quirks and is comfortable in her own skin. Someone that is ok with themselves and is confident in that. They have access to a nearly or completely naked woman that is helping them feel good. As far as they are concerned, they have won the lottery.
You are in charge of what you show, how much you show, and what you do. Make sure you are your authentic self and stay true to that. Come up with a list of what you are willing to do, what you’ll never do, and what you might try once. You’re amazing how you are, and men and women will pay to see you, not who you think you need to be to make money camming.
The clientele that you will find as a cam model is sometimes what you will probably expect. Unhappily married men and women, workaholics, and people looking to experiment. You may also find that some of your clients are the kind of man or woman that have a hard time meeting or approaching people because of a lack of self-confidence. Some of your clients may also be the same sex you are.
Some of the men that I read about that frequent cam model rooms seemed to echo the same sentiment: the model is like a therapist that just happens to get naked. To quote an article on thestranger.com, cam rooms are “less strip club, more like a pub with a hot bartender who wants to make everyone laugh.”
The clients say that it’s about more than sex. It’s about a connection. Some guys want to share their day with someone because there is no one at home. It’s a place to hang out and chat with other people, and as the model in the room you are helping the clients be happy and feel good, feel seen, which is something that we all want.
You may also be a way for couples to try new things that they wouldn’t normally try. They may be into cuckoldry, watching your partner have sex with someone else, but be too gun shy to try it with someone in person.
Again, you are helping fulfill fantasies and making people find some happiness. As a people pleaser, this aspect of the gig is the most appealing to me. I love to make people feel good and happy. This is so very rewarding in and of itself, plus you’ll make some money on top of it.
Safety is very important. The online world is like the wild west when it comes to safety and crime. While the upside of camming is high, you need to think of the negatives as well.
Unlike a strip club where there is security to help you if someone harasses you or to walk you to your car to make sure you get home safe, you need to have safeguards in place. You need to be sure that clients can’t find your home or your workplace. Even though there isn’t an actual bouncer, there are things that you can do to protect yourself.
These are just a few of the topics you should consider when thinking about ways to protect yourself. Additional safety tips can be found at this amazing resource, The Cam Girl Toolbox.
While it may appear that there is nothing but an upside with camming, there are some things that you will need to overcome. These things may happen during a session or even in comments. Potential clients may even send you a message that can be problematic.
How will you handle someone making negative comments about you? About your body? About what you will or won’t do? These are important things to consider and have a plan for.
It is important to plan for these types of responses. You need to know how to handle these situations. How will you handle trolls? How about a request that is something you won’t do at all?
It doesn’t happen often, but when you put yourself out there, you will encounter some negativity. That’s unfortunately something that can occur. It’s always good to have an idea of what you will say to someone that comes at you with mean or ugly comments. This is your business and you are in control of what happens. Don’t be afraid to ask them to leave your room. Have a plan so that you aren’t caught off guard.
There will be those that judge because they only see the black and white of the work. You will be a sex worker and there are those that don’t agree with that type of work. How will you handle that? Again, thinking of these scenarios ahead of time and how you will handle them will help prevent potentially ruining a shift because you feel down.
The cam model industry can be very lucrative, but how much do you get paid and how do you get your money?
You determine your financial worth for the service that you are providing. You don’t want to have unreal expectations of what you will be making. Like any business starting out, you’ll want to know what the averages are. If you make more, that’s great, but if you go in with unreal expectations, then you could give up before you even really give yourself time to ramp up your business.
Average earrings for models range between $200-$1000 a day. Not bad for 3-5 hours of work a day. However, it is important to remember that earnings can vary day to day, shift to shift. Some will be very lucrative, and some won’t. Keep pushing through. Consistency is key when you are building a business, your brand, and your following.
There are several ways that cam models get paid. The majority of models get paid with tips during their live shows. A customer will make a request and pay the model to honor the request. Or the model can offer to do various tasks once they get so many tips. There are also pay-per-minute shows that customers can use. Think back to the old 1-900 numbers where your phone company billed you per minute that you were on a call. The client’s method of payment gets billed for every minute that they are in the room.
One of my questions came to how you access your money. As a freelancer and sole proprietor, it’s important to have clear expectations of how you get access to your funds. You need to know how this is going to happen before you begin your work. There are a few ways to get paid for all of your hard work.
Don’t use the following ways to accept money:
Now that you’ve learned some of the basics, you have the tools you need to start and figured out your brand, where will you have your shows?
According to Ready, Set, Cam, these are the top 3 sites to host your camming business.
XModels: This website was very easy to navigate. The clients use pay per minute chats to interact with you. Models that use this site keep anywhere between 45%-75% of the income that they generate from their shows. XModels pays out every two weeks.
Chaturbate: This website offers two ways for your clients to pay. They can either use tokens or pay per minute. Chaturbate is far more competitive than Xmodels to build a following and get your room known due to the high number of models on the site. The upside though is that the site has high traffic, so you have a higher chance of getting clients and a following. Model revenue on the site is 60% and they pay out weekly.
Onlyfans: What I like about OnlyFans is that it is a way to earn a more stable income, especially considering the nature of camming and the variability of income per shift. Clients pay a subscription fee that you set. You can also accept tips on top of the subscription fee for additional content. While it’s not strictly a camming site, you can post custom content and also clients can make requests via direct messaging. You must have a following on social media (1000 minimum) in order to have an OnlyFans account. The model pay is 80% of what they charge and the site pays weekly.
We have a more comprehensive review of camming sites here on Sofia Gray.
I was impressed at the business savvy that the models I read about had when it came to their modeling business. The other thing that struck me was how authenticity played such a big role in how successful they are. The less fake they were, the more success they had. It’s important to be true to who you are.
Camming is a great way to make money. There is minimal start up and you’re in control of how and when you work. I hope you give it a shot!
